The
photographic process was perfected in 1839 by Lois Daguerre.
His "photograph" was a silvered image on a copper
plate called a "Daguerreotype". William Henry Fox
Talbot, of England simultaneously perfected a paper process
called a "Talbot-type" or Calotype. Other inventors
followed with different types of photographic processes, such
as Ambrotypes (photographs on glass) and Tintypes (photographs
on tin).
In the 19th century, photographers were busily capturing on
camera a portrait of a young & growing nation. Matthew Brady,
Civil War photographer was probably the most famous photographer
on the 19th century. Brady's Civil War photographs, as well
as other photographers who went out West, gave America a complete
photographic record of events as they were unfolding.
Who
was Amor De Cosmos?
Amor
de Cosmos traveled throughout the Mother Lode, & settled
in Columbia in the 1850's for a brief period. Born William Alexander
Smith in Boston in 1825, he had his name legally changed in
1854 to one that projected what he loved most: order, beauty,
the world, and the universe. Amor de Cosmos left California
in 1858 & settled on Vancouver Island where he was elected
premier of the province for two years & represented Victoria
at Ottawa. Amor de Cosmos was quite controversial; and
during his later years, his behavior became very eccentric.
He died on July 4, 1897.
